After beginning his career as a neurosurgeon, Maurice Aubert decided to develop a new discipline : Medical Oceanography.
With his wife, he created the Research and Studies Center of Marine Biology and Medical Oceanography (CERBOM) Nice and became Director of Research at the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM).
He directed the Centre for thirty years.
In the early 70s, it highlighted the phenomena of mediation between species, which he calls the “interspecies chemical mediators” (chemicals synthesized by animal or vegetable marine species released into the surrounding environment, which act at a distance on the same species or other species).
This work won national and international awards.
In 1996, Maurice and Jacqueline AUBERT establish the International University of the Sea (UIM) with the help of the municipality of Cagnes sur Mer town council.
UIM’s aim is to advance scientific training, research, and easy access to various maritime professions, ranging from scientific research and higher education in the techniques of protection and exploitation of marine and coastal aquaculture, Thalassotherapy, ship captains, etc..
